“Then Jesus answered and said to her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.’ And her daughter was healed from that very hour.” Matthew 15:28 NKJV
Healing belongs to me! I want you to say that over and over again to yourself until your whole system starts to believe it because Jesus said so. In Matthew 15:21-28 Jesus was speaking to a woman who was not Jewish which meant she was not covered by the covenant God had made with the descendants of Abraham in the Old Testament. It was such an important covenant that at one point in Jesus’ ministry He comes across a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years and who could not straighten up at all. In healing her in Luke 13:16 he said, “And this woman, a daughter (descendant) of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
So this Canaanite woman had heard about Jesus and her daughter was very ill, possessed by a demon. She was not entitled by birth but she believed that Jesus was compassionate and that He would do something about her daughters situation. She believed so much that the disciples could not get rid of her and no matter what Jesus said she had a response. In verse 26, Jesus said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread (referring to the children of Israel) and throw it to the little dogs.” But she replied saying, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” As a result Jesus said, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
In reading through the gospels, there are only two times Jesus mentioned to someone that they had great faith which brought about healing, here and with the centurion. Some things we can learn from the Holy Spirit as we read about the woman from Canaan are that i) you have to desire healing, that is you have to want it so much you are willing to build up your faith, ii) you have to believe Jesus will do something about your situation not just that He can but He will, iii) you have to know that Jesus is not the source of sickness, He is the healer and iv) you have to be persistent in faith and not take no for an answer.
One of the scriptures that resonates so much with this is where Jesus said in Luke 18:8, “I tell you that He (God) will defend and avenge them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find [this kind of persistent] faith on the earth?”
Prayer: Heavenly Father we thank you that healing belongs to us. We pray that we will always remember this and be willing to fight the good fight of faith when sickness or disease tries to take hold of us. We pray for one another that we may be healed as your word says, healing is the children’s bread. May we be persistent and relentless in our faith and may we all testify to your healing in our lives in Jesus Name.
