Had I Not

[What, what would have become of me] had I not believed that I would see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living! Psalm 27:13 (AMPC)
It was a bright sunny Sunday afternoon in 1987, lying on the hospital bed was this lean underweight young man with no strength in him, to enjoy the best life has to offer. He had been in hospital in and out for 6 months suffering from ulcerative colitis which was deemed untreatable. This bright afternoon, his aunties and sibling came to see him in hospital, they stood around his bed and watched in despair, what will become of him, he will not survive, they seem to whisper to one another. Watching them huddle together outside and whispering to one another, fear came upon him and he thought to himself, “this is the end, death is upon me“. Tears rolled down his face as he laid on the bed. This was a dark moment, the last moments perhaps. Then, a man walked in to visit him, it was his father’s handyman, plumber, he saw the tears running down the man’s face, the handyman chasticed him, “where is your faith?“ he asked, “if you believe, read the bible and pray, there is nothing impossible for God“
In this dark moment, God sent a helper, as He promised. The handyman came like the Holy Spirit brings God’s promises to our remembrance, infuses and invigourates us from within. God said in Isaiah 54:10 ERV
“The mountains may disappear, and the hills may become dust, but my faithful love will never leave you.“ The bible also reminds us in Isaiah 41:10 ERV “Don’t worry— I am with you. Don’t be afraid— I am your God. I will make you strong and help you. I will support you with my right hand that brings victory“. At times we forget, we are in God’s care and He watches over us. We need a little reminder in dark trying times, as these moments can be overwhelming. The little push from the handyman, drew this young man out of his despair and giving up to death, throwing in the towel and surrendering to the disease, he refocused his attention onto what God promises.
Where is your faith? In the situation or the circumstances around you? In the reports of the surgeon or what God’s promises? What do you see? The word of God is His promises to us, a covenant that He never breaks. Our faith and hope should be rooted in the unfailing promises of God, reminding ourselves again and again … be satisfied with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never run away from you.” So we can feel sure and say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. People can do nothing to me.” Hebrews 13:5-6 ERV. To keep our hearts from wavering and avoid getting into these dark overwhelming moments, we have to belive God and His Word and give constant attention to His Word.
The young man went back into the Word and believed “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.“ Proverbs 4:20-22 NKJV. As he believed faith arose in him again, and he could see what Faith sees and held onto it. Faith sees God’s healing, God’s strength, God’s restoration. The young man could see himself living, the Word bringing life to his flesh. Though it was not evident physically, but Faith sees it and he received it. He believed, though he could not see. If he did not believe, he could have been consumed by the disease. He set his eyes on the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. He had victory over sickness, disease and death because he believed.
Lord, it is our responsibility to fight the good fight of Faith and see the manifestation of the victory You attained for us. God help to hear the Holy Spirit as we are constantly reminded of your love and promises, to draw near in Faith, stand firm on the truth of Your Word and see the manifestation of good success in all areas of our lives in Jesus name. BELIEVE and SEE.
