For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world…our faith 1 John 5:4

Have you ever taken thought of what success or victory means to you? Some of us gauge our daily joy meter with results and achievements, how much of our “To Do List” is ticked off and how close are we to our strategic goals. Whether it is in our work life, our home life, or our Christian walk, it’s easy to become overly interested in results, goals and performance. We can become caught up in measuring success by cultural standards. We turn to gimmicks and fads to get “results” when living the Christian life seems difficult or when the gospel seems to fail us in the here and now. We easily forget how Christ measures success in this life.

C.S. Lewis reminded his friend Arthur Greeves, “It is not your business to succeed (no one can be sure of that), but to do right with God. When you have done so, the rest lies with God.” We must constantly remind ourselves of this, but there is more that God’s Word tells us. It speaks of the real victory we can possess even now but it often doesn’t look like the victory we’d expect.

God wants us to live in victory! Jesus came not only so we could be saved spiritually, but so that we could have victorious lives in Him here on earth. Life may not always seem pleasant, but you can still come out on top in any situation. God has won the victory for us just as we received the gift of salvation, God gave us victory through Jesus Christ. A victorious life is a fruitful life that is pleasing to God. A life of victory with direction, fulfilment, meaning and victory over sin.

Many Christians are in a situation where we get preoccupied with daily routine, spend much time and energy in the rat race of career progression, business growth, unable to resist temptations that come with the rat race, ultimately resulting in the loss of life’s meaning and direction. Why is that? Maybe we started out good and close to God, but we slowly drifted away, probably became like the Galatians trying to depend on our strength, skills, intellect and talents walking in the flesh. Galatians 3:3 asks “How can you be so stupid? Do you think that by yourself you can complete what God’s Spirit started in you?”

We must never forget that victory is the work of God in us, our faith in God and His accomplishment for us, not our accomplishment at all. We cannot sustain victory by ourselves but by God and Holy Spirit at work in us. The victorious life is simply a life fully surrendered to God, with Christ dwelling within and in complete control— a life in which the only desire is to bring glory to Jesus Christ. It is the only truly happy life, yet Christians refuse to enter in, lest their earthly lives should be made miserable! Isaiah 1:19 says “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land” Righteousness, Peace and Joy comes from a life that is fully surrendered to God with obedience and doing His commandments, the Word. All that we desire in life and victory over the enemy is already ours.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

We have victory over sickness, diseases, lack, poverty, fear, separation, death, anxiety, confusion, unproductive life, barrenness, all that is contrary to God’s covenant and His blessings.

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:31)

Thank you Jesus for your words of encouragement and assurance. Perfectly for me and I say a resounding amen to Rom 8:31
