Do Not Forget
Fola Komolafe
GOD spoke to Moses: “Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them that from now on they are to make tassels on the corners of their garments and to mark each corner tassel with a blue thread. When you look at these tassels you’ll remember and keep all the commandments of GOD, and not get distracted by everything you feel or see that seduces you into infidelities. The tassels will signal remembrance and observance of all my commandments, to live a holy life to GOD. I am your GOD who rescued you from the land of Egypt to be your personal God. Yes, I am GOD, your God.” Numbers 15:37-41 MSG
In life there are so many things we do and as a result we forget to do some other things. I can sometimes be so busy that I forget to have lunch until it is too late. People forget birthdays, anniversaries and phone numbers. However, God wants us to remember all things, things He has said to us, things He has done for us and things He is asking us to do. In our reading God wanted to use something tangible to remind the Israelites to keep his commandments and not get distracted by everything they feel or see that seduces or entices them into infidelity or sin. Implying that if you don’t make a conscious effort to remember His commandments you will be enticed by what you feel or see. God does not want us to be moved by what we feel or see, He wants us to believe His commandments and let that be what moves us and governs our behaviours. 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Our world today is filled with many distractions, so much pull on us, so many feelings to be considered and so much for our eyes to see. I am sure that it is much easier for today’s believer to be seduced than it was back then. Seducing is cunning, not always obvious, designed to trick someone into doing something, usually wrong, by making it look very attractive – and this is a device of the enemy, and the world is full of it. I remember the story of the Snow White who was tricked into eating a deliciously looking poisonous apple and then collapsed. Sin is sin, its end is always very bad, and the world tries to dress it up as attractive and pleasurable. But the word of God that you remember is what helps you discern right from wrong no matter how dressed up, popular or attractive it may look – you see right through it. God knew this and the importance of them remembering His word, He went to the extent of putting tassels, like the ones you see holding a curtain to its side on the wall, on the corners of their garments so that everywhere they went they could constantly be reminded to keep His commandments. David said, “your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You (Psalm 119:11).’
I remember as a young girl studying for my exams. I needed to remember all I was studying in each subject so that when I faced a question or challenge, I could respond correctly. If I did not study, I failed the test. But the way I learned to remember was by reading my books over and over again every day. In the same way we are encouraged to read Gods word regularly so we can keep it. Joshua said, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success (Joshua 1:8).” The emphasis is on what you do to remember Gods word. Solomon said, “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; [2] For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you (Proverbs 3:1-2).” There are so many advantages thar come to you as you remember and keep Gods commandments.
God wants us to remember! He has given us His Holy Spirit to bring to our remembrance everything He has told us (John 14:26). So, exercise yourself to remember! The enemy would like to make you forget attacking the word of God in you and he does it through sickness, distractions and such things. You need to resist him and anything that comes against your memory, do not accept it remembering that greater is He (the Holy Spirit) that is in you (given to you by God to remind you of all things), than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). Your memory is blessed, and you have been given a sound mind (Proverbs 10:7, 2 Timothy 1:7)
Psalm 113:1 MSG – Hallelujah! You who serve GOD, praise GOD! Just to speak his name is praise! Just to remember GOD is a blessing- now and tomorrow and always. From east to west, from dawn to dusk, keep lifting all your praises to GOD!
