I Am With You Always
Fola Komolafe
“ 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 NKJV
All believers should get so much comfort from knowing God is with them!
Those five words, I am with you always, which Jesus spoke to his followers when He was leaving the earth and instructing them on what to do, changed them and all they later came to do in His name. I am with you always is a promise that can only be made by someone who loves you dearly, someone who sees you as an important part of Himself, someone committed to your good and your victory in all situations, someone putting themselves on the line and willing to sacrifice everything to be at your side – only someone like this could make the promise, I am with you always through thick and thin.
Noone else can say that – couples promise to stay married till death do us part, children leave home when the time is right – so who else can say I am with you always, and not only whilst you are here on this earth but a promise that transcends beyond and to the end of this age. Only Jesus can and He says, I am with you always! I am with you even if you cannot physically see me! Believe I am with you because your spirit know I am here, I will never lie to you!
Jesus promised it and so did God! In Hebrews 13:5 God Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” But there is more as the verses before and after challenges us to think about our conduct and our words because of what God has said. One translation says, “Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly say, God is there, ready to help; I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?” Knowing God will never let us down, never walk off and leave us is good, but wisdom is allowing that knowledge to change our conduct and our words.
Israel had plenty enemies, people and situations that came against them. But beyond that they had God! God who had promised to continue to deliver them as He did when he freed them from Egypt. However, God needed them to believe that He would do what He promised and to act as people who believed, people who had a Mighty God. He said to them many times not to be afraid, saying through Isaiah the prophet that, “When you have troubles, I am with you. When you cross rivers, you will not be hurt. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not hurt you. That’s because I, the Lord, am your God. I, the Holy One of Israel, am your Saviour. You are precious to me, and I have given you a special place of honour. I love you. That’s why I am willing to trade others, to give up whole nations, to save your life. So don’t be afraid because I am with you (Isaiah 43:2-5).” But the Israelites were always afraid, they did not believe God!
I want to encourage you to dare to believe God! Become a faith filled believer and not a fearful believer because Jesus said, I am with you always and God promised I will never leave you nor forsake you!
