“….as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” 2 Peter 1:3 NKJV

I have a Bible version I am reading this year which has been an absolute blessing, and it is the Richard Francis Weymouth translation of the New Testament in modern speech. In it verse 3 of 2nd Peter 1 says, “seeing that His divine power has given us all things that are needful for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and perfection.” As I read it, I remember thanking God that I do not depend on the world for my needs but as I increase in my knowledge of God, I realise all the wonderful things He has given me that are needful for this life and godliness.

His divine power is our source for everything. The word divine or ‘theios’ is only used three times in the New Testament referring to the only true God. It carries the weight of the Godhead, and all that God is. His divine power is God’s inherent power, strength and ability residing in Him by virtue of His nature and which He exerts on our behalf. It is His miraculous power, His force and might which nothing in heaven, on earth or under the earth can ever withstand or come against.

In the world there is so much instability, economic turmoil, crisis and as you look throughout history, God has always wanted to be our only source. Time and time again His people would sway trusting in the things given to them by God such as a good job, a secure income, a great investment plan for example however history has shown the unreliability of these things. People have committed suicide when their investments crashed because all their hope was placed in the security of their investment.

See what He said to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8:11-20: “Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, lest-when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; …. then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.

If God and His divine power is your source you know He is stable, reliable and the force of His inherent power has already given you all you need, so you rest in Him when the world is panicking.

His divine power has given you all things that are needful for life and godliness. It has already been done! You may ask what are the all things? I want to know what these all things are. How do I find them out? In His book where I find the knowledge of Him. Let me share an illustration with you. “Someone (let’s call him John) says to you when I die, I am living all things to you so you can have a good life. One day John dies, and you go around saying, ‘John left all his things to me so I can live a good life.’ Is it true that John left all things to you? Yes. Is saying he left all things to you sufficient for you to live a good life? No. Can you die living a poor life knowing he left you all things? Yes. Why? Because you never claimed it because you did not read the will to find out what was the all things that was yours? You had no knowledge of his will.

Knowledge is powerful, ignorance destroys! Have you seen people fight for their rights once they know it? They always had a right to certain freedoms but as long as they were ignorant of these rights, they were subject to exploitation, abuse and a lower kind of living. But as soon as knowledge comes, freedom comes, and their life becomes very different.

So, make a commitment to increase in your knowledge of God and not only will that pull you closer to Him, but you will also discover like beautiful treasures all the wonderful things needful, necessary and essential for life and godliness that He has given to you. You cannot afford to be ignorant!
