Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God’s love for us). 1 Corinthians 16:14 (AMPC)
In the world today as we look around and especially as we see the war unfolding in Eastern Europe for selfish and self centred reasons, we see the failings of natural human love. No matter how sincere natural human love looks like, it has the potential to turn to hatred overnight because it can be selfish and self centred putting itself first.
There is a new kind of love introduced to us by our Lord Jesus Christ that is greater, lasting and that never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:8 says, ‘love never fails,’ but it is not talking about the natural human love but the God kind of love which is divine. God is love (1 John 4:8) and He has poured this love into the heart of every born again child of His by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). And so the voice version of 1 Corinthians 16:14 says, ” Let love (God’s divine love) prevail in your life, words, and actions. God’s love should be what motivates all of our words and actions. “
So how do we love like God in a world where we are surrounded by people who are not guided by His love? I am not saying it is easy but it is possible because of the Holy Spirit. It is possible to make a decision to pursue the God kind of love and dare to be different for Christ’s sake when you least feel like it. A decision to love is not made by the flesh where you are feeling the pain or by the mind where you are seeing and reminding yourself of all the injustices done and why they deserve your vengeance. A decision to love like God, no matter what, is made by your spirit where the love of God has been poured. Once you make the decision before God (I suggest voicing it so you can hear yourself say it) then the Holy Spirit starts to work on you first, changing you to become more like God – seeing like Him, thinking like Him, forgiving like Him and loving like Him. It is an iterative process of change requiring our complete surrender and trust. I can hear someone shout, ‘but it’s not about me.’ However in God’s eyes it is always about you because you are the object of His love and He wants nothing to stand in the way of your loving relationship with Him and His limitless blessings.
The measure of your willingness (want to) and ability (able to) to walk in divine love is closely related to the closeness of your fellowship with God who is Love and His words such that all of Him rubs off on your spirit, energising your spirit so that in that situation your spirit dominates and puts under the pulls of the flesh, emotions and human will.
The church, the body of Christ who we are, is in the world but not of the world. We are of Christ and our greatest witness to this world is not our faith, or our humility but our love. Jesus said in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” The church is the only answer to the failings of love in this world. We have a new kind of love in our hearts so we need to let the love of God dominate us. 1 Cor.14:1 says, “eagerly pursue and seek to acquire this love, make it your aim and your great quest.”
