The steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step]. Psalm 37:23 AMPC
I ask myself as we read this verse of scripture, why is it so important that our steps are ordered, directed, prepared and established by God? I particularly like the use of the word established, because something that is established endures forever as it has been set up on a firm and permanent basis. Jeremiah said, “He (God) made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.” (Jeremiah 51:15). When God establishes something or someone, it has a sense of firm footing, being unshakeable, secure and permanency around it. For example God said to David when He established him as king over Israel that his house, his kingdom and his throne shall be established for ever (2 Samuel 7:16).
So why is this a good thing? Once God establishes something or someone it will be as He said it would be. His words indicates the things He has established for us, He spoke the world into being when He established it and He spoke to David through the prophet when He established Him and today He has spoken to us through His words the things He has established for us in the new covenant. Circumstances may challenge, storms may range, situations may come but knowing it is God who has established you and His word over you is knowing that in all these things, whatever they may be, you will be victorious and overcome.
The Lord wants to direct and establish your steps and your goings everyday. He knows where you should step and where you should not. I remember watching a programme that showed a field with so many land mines on them, and there was an expert guiding people through the field to their destination in a way that they avoided stepping on any of the land mines causing great harm to themselves and others. So it is for us when we follow the directions of the Lord.
I love the passion translation of this verse which says, “the steps of the God-pursuing ones follow firmly in the footsteps of the Lord, and God delights in every step they take to follow him.” The next verse goes on to say, “if they stumble badly (which we all do from time to time) they will still survive, for the Lord lifts them up with his hands.” Isn’t that so beautiful? If we stumble so badly as we follow Him, we will still survive!
I encourage you today to ask God to order, direct and establish your steps and don’t be afraid to take the next step. I think of my staircase made of a number of steps taking me upwards to my destination. Our lives are made up of taking steps, one after another, in the upward direction God has planned for our lives. So ask Him to direct you and then take a step in faith knowing you will survive well.
Prayer: Abba Father I love you and thank you for your word of encouragement and hope. I ask you to direct, order and establish my steps everyday. I know you have good plans for my life established and promised in your words to me. So I say today in faith that like you said to David that my house, my life, my days, my future, all my goings have been established by you and nothing can stop that which you have established for me coming to pass in Jesus Name. I will always survive and I rejoice in you now and forever. Amen
