Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Isaiah 53:1 (NKJV)
I want to emphasise the importance of believing God’s word, and before you say, “of course I believe,” I want you to really think about whether you do believe or whether you merely agree in your mind quite casually with who God is and His word / report. You will remember when the Bible said in Gen 15:6 that Abraham believed in the Lord, and He (the Lord) counted it to him (Abraham) as righteousness. You see all the promises of God belong to the righteous and so the original translation of the conversation with Abraham gives the impression that God considered, thought about and added up everything that Abraham’s belief meant – and then determined that it was equal to righteousness, that is right standing with God.
However, if you are a believer today, Romans 3:22 talks about the righteousness of God, being through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. So many people struggle to believe that they are righteous but if you have faith in Jesus Christ today, you are the righteousness of God which means ‘you are in the right with God, God sees you as being in right standing with him.’ Not because of anything you did but because of everything that Jesus did, and which stands true to eternity. But to fully experience the God benefits of being righteous you must believe it because it is so true that you are whether you believe it or not. Jesus died for the remission of all our sins, and once sin is removed all that is left is righteousness! Paul said in Romans 3:3-4, “For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar.”
But you and I are people who believe and so we are saved. To believe has strong roots that signify permanence, certainty, steadfastness and standing firm. The Amplified version would usually translate the word to believe as to trust in, to rely on and to remain steadfast to. This is what the Lord saw in Abraham who had obediently left his country when He asked him to, had been victorious in getting Lot his cousin back and had paid tithes to Melchizedek and to whom the Lord had just said, ‘I am your shield (protector) and your exceedingly great reward (provider).”
I want to encourage you to believe God and His word today and everyday you read it. Receive the word of God as it is. I am of the view that when the bible says Abraham believed in the Lord, it meant that Abraham was saying, ‘no matter what my natural senses see, hear or think, I believe in the Lord and what He is able to do according to His word.’ The arm of the Lord represents the victorious power of God on display and it is to those who believe that the arm of the Lord is revealed. In Isaiah 7:9 the Lord said to Israel, “if you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.” You and I can believe God today because we have already seen His goodness and love manifested in our lives. He wants to do so much more in our lives if only we can believe in Him and believe His word. Believing God radically changes everything in your life (from what is considered normal or reasonable) directing all your thoughts, words and actions towards the manifestation of God’s perfect will and promises in your life.
