“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” John 14:1
In the world today, there are lots of troubled hearts and a lot of uncertainty about the future. Many people don’t know what will happen and how things will work out for them resulting in fear, agitation and uncertainty. However, God wants us to believe and behave differently because He has already gone ahead and prepared a good future for us.
Jesus had just told his disciples that He would be leaving them to go to the Father and they could not come with Him now. The disciples for the last three years had spent all their time with Him, learning from Him and being directed by Him. Can you imagine how they felt and the emotions they must have been experiencing? What would they do? Peter even tried to persuade Jesus that He would follow Him anywhere and lay down his life for Him. Their response showed their worry and concern about their future without Him.
Jesus immediately confronts this saying, “Do not let your heart be troubled, instead remember that you believe in God, I am asking you to also believe in me.” Believe that I will never leave you helpless or forsake you. He goes on to explain how He had already taken care of them by preparing a place for them. You and I need to believe that God has already prepared our future (and it is good because all that God does for us is good), and there is no situation on earth that can stop it coming to pass as long as we continue to believe God and believe Jesus.
Your heart is so important to God, because your heart represents the centre of your motivations, desires and inclinations. It is with your heart that you believe, and this is why Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” You guard your heart from fear and being troubled by filling it with the good news of God’s word. Psalm 112:7 (NIV) says, “They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”
You need to constantly hear something else – Gods good news. It will produce faith in your heart and will keep you steady, believing and strong when everything in the world around you are wobbly and uncertain. But most importantly the word will bring itself to pass in your life.
So, don’t let you heart be troubled. God already has a good plan for your future.
